How to Disconnect From Technology: 4 Lessons From My Silent Retreat
When was the last time you went an entire day (or even an hour!) without checking your phone, looking at a screen, or responding to a notification?
We live in a world where demands, tech, and everyday noise constantly overstimulate us. Between work obligations, family life, and constant caretaking, technology keeps our minds stuck on high alert. We feel mentally exhausted, yet unable to switch off.
To give my own nervous system a complete break, I recently travelled to Utrecht in the Netherlands for a 3–4-day Vipassana meditation retreat right by the forest. Here’s how I learned to disconnect from technology, turn inward, and reconnect with myself.
Vipassana Meditation Retreat: What is it?
Vipassana is an ancient Indian meditation practice that means "to see things as they really are." It relies purely on observing your natural breath, head-to-toe physical awareness, and total silence to quiet internal noise (without controlled breathing, visualisations, or chanting). This meditation practice shows you how to disconnect using these core elements:
- Noble Silence: Removing eye contact, talking, and devices eliminates external noise so your mind can finally settle.
- Present Awareness: Observing natural bodily sensations without trying to change them teaches your brain to stop overreacting to daily stress.
- Mental Discipline: Sustained practice of this type of meditation prevents mental overload, showing you how to disconnect from technology and retrain an overstimulated nervous system.
The retreat I joined was completely tech-free: phones powered off and locked away, no talking, and 5 hours of daily meditation surrounded by nature. While some Vipassana retreats last 10 (hardcore!) days, with strict isolation for most of the day, this 4-day retreat was the ultimate reset. I came home feeling really clear-headed, refreshed, and deeply connected with myself again.

How to Disconnect From Technology
Stepping completely away from technology made me aware of how easily modern life can overstimulate me. It also showed me how anyone can quiet their mind; you don’t need to book a retreat; you can do it with just small daily practices, too.
1. Total Silence Quiets the Internal Noise
At the retreat, sitting in total silence without my phone forced my mind to slow down. Vipassana is a traditional form of meditation focused on seeing things as they truly are. When you remove tech, you stop feeding the mental chatter, and your mind naturally grows quieter, giving you control over your thoughts so they stop spiralling when life’s stresses come along.
✨Tip: You don't need to head into a forest to experience this shift. Turning off your phone notifications for just one hour today, closing your eyes, and taking a few slow, conscious breaths offers your mind that same chance to settle.

2. Removing Distractions Allows You to Turn Inward
In our daily lives, we reach for our phones the second we feel stillness or discomfort. During five hours of daily meditation, I couldn't escape into a screen. I had to just "be", connecting to my body, my feelings, and my breath. Turning inward allowed me to process emotions rather than constantly burying them under digital noise.
✨Tip: We can recreate this stillness at home simply by allowing ourselves to be bored. The next time you are waiting in a queue, sitting at traffic lights, or drinking your morning coffee, resist the urge to pull out your phone and let your mind wander naturally instead.
3. Disconnecting Calms an Overstimulated Nervous System
Constant screen time keeps your body in a subtle fight-or-flight state. By keeping tech completely away for 4 days, my nervous system finally got the signal that it was safe to step down from high alert, allowing my energy to restore naturally.
✨Tip: To give your own nervous system a mini digital detox, try going for a 30-minute walk outside without your phone, headphones, or podcasts. Just listen to nature and let your senses rest.

4. Remove Yourself from Everyday Demands to Reconnect
At the retreat, I had no one to take care of, no emails to answer, and no family logistics to manage. It was a powerful reminder that taking time away from the noise isn't selfish; it is essential for your well-being and gives you the clarity to show up far better in your everyday life.
✨Tip: You can build this reset into your evening routine simply by putting your phone in another room an hour before bed, ensuring your day ends in quiet reflection rather than with harsh screen light.
